The Players in Football
Each football team comprises eleven players playing on the field, at a given time. Teams will also typically have a reserve team standing by at the sidelines should the coach or team manager decide to substitute any member of the team or in the event of an injury to a player currently playing on the field.
Each team will usually have a captain who will be involved in the coin toss at the start of the game to determine which side of the field their team will be playing or before the start of penalties to decide which team goes first. Any player in any position may assume the mantle of captain. Teams generally have three types of players according to their position in the field i.e. forward or attacking, midfield and defence. The number of the players in these positions depend on the football strategy or formation determined by the coach.
Attackers or strikers’ main objective is to score as many goals as possible. Strikers may also adopt a midfield position but typically they rely on midfield players to feed them the ball. Midfielders do their best to ensure that strikers are given every opportunity to score while also ensuring that the ball is best kept in their opponents’ half of the field. Defenders are a team’s penultimate line of defence barring the goalkeeper, who is indeed their last line of defence being the only player who is allowed to handle the ball with his hands. Thus, sometimes the overall football results literally lie in the hands of the goalkeeper.
